Building And Supporting Your Immune System

It’s back to school time. You’re busy with the hustle of making sure your child has a lunch box they can open (seriously, what’s with all these Bento and YumBox options?!), you are figuring out what kind of lunch you should pack (or should I say figure out what they will actually eat!), making sure their clothes are ready, everything is labelled with their name, getting their school supply list items, checking the school’s list of required items, and enjoying the last little time you have before another summer ends. But what a lot of people overlook is how to boost and keep you and your family’s immune system supported during this time of transition of back to school and throughout the school year.
Your immune system is your body’s natural defence against germs, bacteria and infections and requires balance for it to function at an optimal level. There are many ways to support your body to encourage a healthy immune function – adequate sleep, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, limiting processed and deep fried foods, exercising daily, limiting stress whenever possible, removing as many toxins from your environment as possible and certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils. Without a healthy immune system, you could not ward off potential threats that surround us each day. By combining these factors, you can help keep your immune system strong and healthy.
Supporting Your Immune System
The air within our home is 200-300% more polluted than the air we breathe outside. When I heard this, I was floored! I thought, ‘This is impossible, there’s no way!’ But upon further investigation I quickly began to see why. Candles, air fresheners, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, dishwashing soap, dishwasher detergent, hair products, carpets (the smell you are smelling when you unroll it is called off-gassing and happens based on how the product was manufactured) and skin care products all contribute to the suppression of our immune system and our body’s ability to heal itself.
Why? Because they all contain synthetic ingredients and fragrances, among other very toxic and harmful ingredients. Fragrance, for example, is comprised of over 3,000 chemicals. THREE THOUSAND!!! When you begin to look up the other ingredients in these products, you will quickly begin to see a pattern: cancer-causing agents, carcinogenic agents, respiratory disruptors, hormone disruptors, endocrine disruptors, reproductive organ harm, skin rashes and burns and more. Whether you use the chemicals topically, aromatically or internally, your body is absorbing them and they can be found within your bloodstream.
Are you noticing a pattern yet?
Can you see how these toxins are contributing factors to suppressing the immune system and not allowing your body to do the work it naturally knows how to do in warding off germs, infections and bacteria?
By eliminating these toxins from your home, you will notice an immediate change in your health. And I’m speaking from personal experience on this one. My oldest was sick every three weeks (no joke) with some kind of respiratory sickness and then a cough that would linger for another two week. It was extremely frustrating. It wasn’t until I started my own product line and was researching ingredients commonly used in the industry that I began to wake up to what was happening in my own home! I quickly threw out every toxic product in my home and replaced it with a safer and 100% natural product infused with certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils. I couldn’t believe how quickly I was seeing this change take effect. By tossing these products in the trash, replacing them with more natural and safer options and supporting our bodies with essential oils, our bodies were starting to do the work at repairing the damage that was done. We started getting sick less often, my daughter’s cough would last a day or 2 – if it lingered at all – and I didn’t need to worry anymore about her putting her hands in her mouth after being on various surfaces. Our children are a reflection of decisions we make, and I never realized what was actually going on until I took a deeper look. We eventually get to this point where we want to do better by them, and then we take action.
‘In a study spearheaded by the Environmental Working Group (EWG)…researchers at two major laboratories found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood from 10 babies born in August and September of 2004 in U.S. hospitals. Tests revealed a total of 287 chemicals in the group…Of the 287 chemicals we detected in umbilical cord blood, we know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests.’3 This study is mind-blowing, especially to think that babies are already coming into the world with a toxic body. So by taking these little steps, they will amount to huge gains, and your body will thank you for it.
If this topic has peaked your interest (this is what I am passionate about and could go on forever!), I encourage you to take a look at the EWG (Environmental Working Group) website and look up some of this information. You can also look up information on the FDA around cosmetics and how loose their regulations are. You will be blown away.
Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are the #1 verified essential oils in the world. They are the purest, most potent and efficacious oils harvested and distilled in the plant’s indigenous country. ‘Scientific study demonstrates that diffusion of essential oils can purify and cleanse the air, providing added protection…OnGuard and Lemon contain powerful cleansing properties that purify the air we breathe, delivering positive effects on the immune system.’2
A Simple Daily Routine
It takes 21 days to make a routine habit. Once you are in the habit of implementing these strategies into your daily routine, it will become second nature and you will begin to see the long term benefits of your commitment. This is what I do every single morning in my home to keep our bodies supported, particularly at the changes in season or times of the year when there tends to be more illnesses going around. Kids routines are denoted in purple.
Give my body a good stretch before sitting up in bed
Apply Balance to the bottom of our feet to ground and support us throughout the day (this applies to the kids as well!)
Diffuse a citrus oil to promote happy feelings and to energize
After washing up and getting dressed, applying the Immune Support roller to the bottom of the feet (the kids get Stronger from the Kids Collection in the morning)
Take my LLV with Lemon EO in my water
OnGuard, Copaiba & Frankincense in a veggie cap
Kids: Spray my Lice Spray in their hair. If there’s a Lice notice sent home, I roll Tea Tree Touch along the hairline and spray my mixture throughout the hair
Drink water with citrus oils
Diffuse (Since it’s back to school time, I diffuse OnGuard all day long, particularly around the time that the kids come home from school or daycare)
Wash hands with OnGuard hand soap throughout the day
Use OnGuard Hand Sanitizer throughout the day (I keep one in the kids backpack or lunch bag and one in my purse)
High Quality Cod Liver Oil
Pure Vitamin C Spray
Vitamin D drop
NIGHT TIME ROUTINE
Diffuse Lavender or Serenity while the children are getting ready for bed (Great for adults to do as well to unwind at the end of the day)
Add Lavender or Serenity to Epsom salts and add them to your child’s bath
Apply Immune Support Roller on the bottoms of the feet.
A note on essential oils: When using essential oils you want to choose a brand that is thoroughly tested, has the highest quality of standards and produces pure, genuine, unadulterated essential oils. It is also a best practice to use the correct dilution rate when applying essential oils. When you are adding a carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil is best in most cases) to your essential oils, you are not diluting the effectiveness of the essential oil. ‘Topical use of essential oils may induce a sensitivity response, especially on young or sensitive skin. To decrease the likelihood of developing a sensitivity, it is advisable to use a carrier oil to dilute the more potent oils and when trying an oil for the first time. The recommended dilution ratio is typically 1 drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil.’ 3
